Dear Sir,

I have been working in this organization for over three years now, but they have neither reviewed my salary or my position. Is it normal? How long should I wait? Do you think I should talk to my boss about it? Or should I approach the HR manager directly? Or should I just quit?
--Prerana

Dear Prerana,

Three years is a reasonable time to expect salary hike. However, our country has been going through a period of struggle, and companies are having tough time coping with the overheads. Organizations can only increase its staff's salary or give other benefits if the company itself is growing.

Before you take a decision, analyze which out of the following two is right in your case:

1. The company is growing, but it didn't review my salary, or

2. The organization is suffering just like me

If it is the first case, then I would strongly urge you to talk to your supervisor and ask for reasons why they haven't reviewed your salary for so long. If you feel you have been working sincerely and that has translated into visible results, give them clear indications that you cannot continue working without a salary hike. You must also check if your colleagues' salary has been reviewed. If yes, then maybe your performance has not been up to the mark.

If it is the second case, you must realize that the organization cannot do much, and it may be wise for you to leave the company without contemplating further. However, make sure that you have a second option at hand, as leaving your job without any other option can be a risky move.

PS: It is also important for you to consider the office atmosphere, work culture, and management support before deciding to quit.

All the best!
