I'm a mid level career professional who has recently been offered a good promotion. The problem is that it is based outside Kathmandu. I don't want to leave my hometown as I'm used to being around my family and friends and the certain lifestyle in the city. However, this new job post would be a good boost for my career and the salary is very good, too. So, I'm very confused about moving to a new place where I don't know anyone. That's why I feel torn. Please help me come to a decision.
Sarita NakarmiIf you are a career driven individual and if you really wish to grow in the corporate ladder, then there is no alternative to flexibility and adaptability. You must realize that the company is transferring you to a new location mainly because: 1) There is a requirement in that particular place, and 2) They feel you will be able to fulfil their requirement. Relocation of course brings discomfort, but your company is compensating you by offering a promotion. I would suggest you to take a fixed term agreement with your boss and ask him to offer assistance as needed.
By the way, relocation will also add value to your CV. It would reflect that you have the ability to work and adapt to various situations. It will also be a good learning experience for you, as working in Kathmandu and working in other parts of Nepal is largely different. Assuming that your age supports you, it is the right time to experiment and be out of your comfort zone. With regards to lifestyle, yes you have to compromise, but a nice, friendly person can always make new friends and having new friends can always help you in your career.
I think you should take this opportunity and make the best out of it. This will certainly help in your career growth.
All the best.
