“It is natural for people to take to the street if the judiciary fails to protect the people’s rights,” said Thapa, speaking at an interaction organized by Maoist-affiliated journalists in Birtamod, Jhapa.
Thapa stressed the need to rectify shortcomings inside the judiciary. “There is a clear provision that judges who give verdicts against the people can be removed from office through impeachment,” said Thapa. “But I hope the court will uphold the government’s lawful and constitutional decision to give retirement to the generals,” he added.
Thapa also said the Nepal Army and the judiciary must accept decisions taken by the people’s representatives. “The army and the judiciary are not above the people,” he said.
Maoist lawmaker Salikram Jammakattel had led a protest rally in Kathmandu against the Supreme Court and the judge who stayed the government’s letter giving the generals retirement a couple of weeks ago.
Thapa also said the work of army integration was going on in a positive direction. “Even in the situation the technical committee complains about time constraint in accomplishing the task in three months, an action plan is already in place with a view to complete the task on time,” said Thapa.
