DHADING, May 23: A committee has been formed to investigate into the unlawful activities being conducted in Dhading District Jail. A meeting of the officials of the District Administration Office in Dhading Besi on Wednesday formed a three-member investigative team under the coordination of Assistant Chief District Officer Arjun Kumar Sharma Guragain.

An article published on Nagarik daily, a sister orgainisation of Republica, exposing the poor management of Dhading jail prompted the formation of the probe committee. The jail inmates were found enjoying their time in hotel rooms.

The committee consists of Deputy Superintendent of Police Prakash Bista and National Investigation Department's Inspector Uttam Dhungel as members.

The committee is mandated to report all the findings regarding the ill-management of the jail and the inmates' misbehavior to the Chief District Officer (CDO).

CDO Bhagirath Pandey has assured to arrest the police officers involved in taking jail inmates to hotel rooms on the pretext of taking them to the hospital.

“The committee will find out all those police personnel involved in the mismanagement and recommend legal action against them,” said CDO Pandey.

The incident came to light after a video of drunken police guards went viral on social media. The unusual spotting of jail inmates in hotel rooms then added fuel to the fire. The inmates were supposed to leave the jail only for medical purpose.

Prior to this, the Dhading jail inmates had sent letters to the jail administration regarding excessive charge for basic facilities within the prison. Some inmates had even complained of intimidation and bullying by fellow inmates.
