CHITWAN, Aug 12: Financially disadvantaged cancer patients visiting BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital in Bharatpur for treatment have been forced bear their entire medical expenses.

Earlier, the government had been providing Rs 50,000 in assistance to patients identified as poor.[break}

"We had been providing them medicines equivalent to the government´s assistance. Sadly, we had to stop this service as the government has stopped funding," said Dr Laxmi Narayan Singh Executive Director of the hospital. Singh said the government had stopped providing the assistance from the month of April.

Treatment of cancer is undeniably one of the most expensive. "I have undergone a chemotherapy treatment which cost me Rs 40,000. I need to undergo six more sessions and I only have Rs 1000," said Danda Pani, a cancer patient receiving treatment at the hospital. "I came here for treatment after selling the only plot of land I had. Now I have nothing to sell," added Danda Pani.

Around 400 cancer patients visit the hospital every day for treatment. "More than half of them are patients from poor families," said Singh. "We have informed about this situation to the health minister. We will continue our service as soon the government continues its assistance," added Singh.
