Parliamentary committee endorses report recommending reproductive right to women inmates

KATHMANDU, April 16: The parliamentary committee on State Affairs and Good Governance has endorsed the report on amendment and integration of laws relating to prison.


A meeting of the parliamentary committee held in Singha Durbar on Thursday approved the report, recommending the government to ensure reproductive rights to the women inmates. The report has proposed giving authority to the Provincial government as well to oversee prison management.

The report further recommended to not handcuff the inmates while staying in prison, documenting his/her statement, and furnishing views before the court.


If any prisoner is sexually harassed by another prisoner, the oppressor will face two more years of imprisonment or a fine amount up to Rs 20,000, or both. Chairperson of the State Affairs Committee, Sashi Shrestha, argued that those involved in gang rape and rape of children should not be condoned.
