The panel is likely to recommend a fee of Re 1 per minute for using the service inside the country and Rs 3 per minute for using the service outside the country using NT´s network, according to sources.

IP phone can be used from anywhere in the world with the same number through internet. According to NT management, Nepal will launch IP Phone service before India. NT says Nepali residing abroad would benefit the most from the new service.

At present, customers are paying about Rs 15 per minute through formal channel and Rs 5 per minute through informal channel to make calls through IP phone.

NT officials expect the dependency on landline to be drastically reduced once the new service is launched.

“After five years, the future of NT will rest on IP phone because it can be accessed through internet,” the officials said.
