BUTWAL, Jan 1: Shyalpa Tenzin Rinpoche has started a one-rupee campaign to build a Sanctuary for Universal Peace Center in Lumbini. The initiative is working to bring together people from across the social and economic spectrum to be a part of the project. Last week, former executive director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Kulman Ghising, went to Lumbini to contribute one rupee to the campaign. Shyalpa Tenzin Rinpoche, the founder of the Peace Center, urged everyone to contribute one rupee to the campaign. He also said that the project will further promote Lumbini as a top tourist destination.

Rinpoche said he is bringing together people from around the world to be a part of the initiative. People from outside Nepal will be asked to contribute one dollar for the cause, he said. The initiative was started last year. Esala Ruwan Weerakoon, secretary general of SAARC, went to Lumbini and kicked off the campaign last year in November. Member secretary of the Pashupati Area Development Trust, Dr Pradeep Dhakal, also visited Lumbini and contributed to the cause.

Rangrig Yeshe Inc, an American company, is working to build a Bihar in a Lotus flower shape in Lumbini. It will be called the World Peace Center. The Center will have a Bihar, a Gumba and  a conference hall with a capacity to accommodate 2,000 people. Moreover, it will also house a library, meditation centers, museum,  and a number of meeting rooms.

The Center will be a premium place for research on ancient Buddhist and Buddhism-related scriptures. The organization hopes to complete the project in the next three years.
