One arrest for swindling Rs. 110m

KATHMANDU, Aug 29: The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police arrested one person on charges of swindling people by promising them jobs in the public sector and in foreign countries.



Police said Manoj Bahadur Singh, 40, had collected more than Rs 110 million from over 150 people. [break]



According to Deputy Superintendent of the Police Jagadish Pokhrel, a team of CIB arrested Singh from a restaurant in Ranibari of Kathmandu on Tuesday on a tip off. Police said Singh is now in Metropolitan Police Range on judicial remand.



The CIB found that Singh collected between Rs 400,000 to Rs 800,000 each from 22 people promising to send them to the UK. He collected between Rs 50,000 to 80,000 each from 32 people to guaranteeing them jobs in Nepal Police.



Another 12 people paid between Rs 50,000 and RS 300,000 for Nepal Army jobs. He also took Rs 500,000 to Rs 1 million each from 16 people promising them fake visas to various countries and Rs 15.1 million from 20 people for jobs in the UK.



Pokhrel said Singh was able to collect money by creating fake working relationship with the senior police and army officers. Singh disguised himself as a high profile person visiting police, army and other government offices and made fake calls to senior level officials on cell phone to convice the people he could get them jobs.
