Oli objects to revocation of party-split ordinance

KATHMANDU, Sept 28: Former prime minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has expressed his objection to the scrapping of the party-split ordinance even when a parliament meeting is ongoing. Oli objected to the revocation of the controversial ordinance in a meeting with the Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki.  

Earlier, the current government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba introduced the ‘party-split’ ordinance making way for political parties to split if any leader is able to garner the support of at least 20 percent of the parliamentary party members or central working committee members. However, the ordinance was scrapped by President Bidya Devi Bhandari on the recommendation of the government.

According to Oli’s secretariat, speaking with Minister Karki at his residence in Balkot, Oli said that the ordinance was revoked in an unconstitutional way. 

Former CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and Chairman of Janata Samajbadi Party Mahantha Thakur were able to form new political parties as per the amended provisions of the Political Party Act. Nepal-led CPN (Unified Socialist) and Thakur-led Loktantrik Samajbadi Party were formed as per the ordinance before it was revoked by the president on Monday.
