Once NT starts this servcie, all VDCs across the country will have access to broadband Internet with 256 kbps speed using WiMAX technology.[break]
"After the service is launched, people will not have to come to district headquarters to fill application form for the service," Dinesh Dev Pant, joint-spokesperson of NT, said.
He further added that the introduction of the service will also help make Wi-Fi service available in these areas in the next stage.
NT to introduce M-SAN service for better data service
Nepal Telecom (NT) is introducing Multi-Service Access Node (M-SAN) technology for voice and broadband Internet. According to NT officials, M-SAN will ensure better quality and network for broadband Internet irrespective of long distance (of core network and subscriber).
According to an official at PSTN directorate of NT, fixed line under M-SAN technology offers better speed than that of ADSL technology. “There are chances of signal loss in broadband Internet in the existing technology but M-SAN users will not have to suffer this problem,” the official said adding that in M-SAN exchange the distance of network is kept short to ensure better speed.
The technology based on packet-switching network can allow users to use voice, data and video services at the same time. Under this technology, a device is installed in telephone exchange which connects customer´s telephone lines to the core network to offer different services from a single platform. M-SAN exchanges are connected through optical fiber which helps in better service.
Under the traditional fixed line, subscribers could use the speed up to 150 kbps under 256 kbps. The official said, “Under the same offered speed subscribers can enjoy the speed up to 250 kbps.”
NT is planning to expand 105,000 lines under the first phase under this technology with the help of 448 M-SAN exchange. The cost of this service would be similar to that of fixed line and subscribers will be charged as per the usage. The operator is immediately bringing 26 M-SAN exchanges to start the service within this month. Under the trial phase, the operator has already distributed 3,000 M-SAN lines.
Besides introducing new technology, NT has plans to distribute 1.7 million GSM lines, 0.38 million CDMA lines, 28,000 PSTN lines and 46,000 ADSL lines by the end of current fiscal year.
The latest report shows that NT has more than 6.7 million subscribers out of which the number of ADSL users have crossed 71,000 by mid-August 2011.
