KATHMANDU, Oct 10: The fourth Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) Global Conference is set to convene in the capital from October 13 to 15, during which Nepalis residing in various parts of the world will raise a strong voice for constitutional guarantee of their rights and community´s interests. [break]

They will also push for dual citizenship, something that has already been declined, and change in NRN regulations and policy, seeking more friendly investment policy and procedures, and other facilities.

The two-yearly jamboree, in which more than 500 Nepalis residing in 50 different countries are expected to participate, will be inaugurated by President Dr Ram Baran Yadav and closed by Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal.

The first two days of the event will be marked by deliberations by residential and non-residential experts on contemporary issues such as global recession and national economy, peace and development, while the third day has been set aside exclusively for the NRNs, during which they will discuss on internal and organizational issues.

The NRN Association has set the theme for the conference as ´Peaceful and Prosperous Nepal: Our Common Dream´. "Hence, the presentations in the conference will divulge on policy and procedural changes required to drive Nepal to prosperity and ways to negate the impact of global recession on foreign employment,” said Hemant Dawadi.

On the internal issues, NRNs will also discuss ways to strengthen NRNA constitutionally and financially.

As usual, NRNs will hold discussions with the business community and the senior government officials, seeking change in general mindset of doing business and bureaucracy in Nepal. But unlike the past, they are also expected to elect new leadership in the association, for NRNA is also organizing its annual general meeting parallel to the conference.

Dawadi noted that it was too early to say whether there will be elections and change in leadership. "It can be said only when the election process start, he said.

NRNs, however, informed myrepublica.com that officials from numerous associations have already been spelling out their interest for the leadership and other key positions. “Informally said, three of the existing NRNA senior officials are eying to grab the top position in the association," said a source. Likewise, four contestants have shown interest for the vice-presidential berth and three could be vying for secretary´s post, he added.

Despite high-level talks and presence of top profile dignitaries, the conference will offer no charity or programs for the common Nepali citizens though. "Individual NRNs may go to different places and make personal pledging. It will not happen officially through the conference," said the source.

Nonetheless, the association will be signing an agreement, committing a financial assistance of Rs 35 million for renovating Kiriyaputri house (house where people stay to perform death rituals), on October 11.
