The event took a nasty turn when the association organized a caucus in which two presidential candidates -- incumbent President Devman Hirachan and Vice-President Jiba Lamichhane -- were asked to present their personal agendas for a new tenure. [break]
“The lack of meaningful activities over the past two years has already proven that the present leadership is incompetent,” said Lamichhane in his speech.
However, Hirachan retorted hastily saying that Lamichhane has no right to make such a comment as he himself is the vice president in the global NRN body.
Lamichhane even accused Hirachan of rejecting his proposal to extend supporting hands to victims of recent earthquake in the country. “I had proposed that NRN Association must reach out to the needy. But the incumbent president rejected the idea,” he stated.
As Hirachan was about to defend himself, supporters of two presidential candidates turned violent.
This not only disrupted the caucus just within a few minutes of commencement, but also rendered the efforts made by NRN leaders to forge understanding for unanimous election of president fail.
Some 700 NRNs participating in the conference are scheduled to elect new executive body on Friday.
