KATHMANDU, April 8: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has decided to hold talks with the two employees unions to end the strike that has been going on since last 13 days affecting normal routine of the top central bank officials.

The NRB board on Thursday asked the management to resolve the differences it has with the two agitating trade unions.[break]

The strike had drawn the attention of the board after Nepal Financial Institution Employees Association (NFIEA) went on a strike Thursday, bolstering the agitation of another trade union - National Employees Organization (NEO), already on strike since March 27.

Both the agitating trade unions informed Republica that they had submitted their respective memorandums with demands to the management about two months ago.

NEO´s memorandum includes 37-point demand and mainly presses the management to make the workers hired on contract permanent and also revise perks.

NFIEA´s 50-point demand, on the other hand, urges the management to modernize the central bank infrastructure, ensure career growth of staffs and adjust perks in line with inflation.

NEO has been picketing the offices of the governor and deputy governors since the last 13 days and restricting their movements and meetings. NFIEA too had announced that it would restrict the entry of Governor Dr Yuva Raj Khatiwada and Deputy Governors Gopal Kafle and Maha Prasad Adhikari to their respective offices from 10 am to 12 pm on Thursday.

However, neither the governor nor the deputy governors turned up at the office at the scheduled hour to avoid possible confrontation. They reached their chambers in the later half of the day.

The association -- which attributes its strike to ´too much politicization and unfair transfers´ -- even announced restricting the governor and deputy governors from entering their offices indefinitely from Friday.

“The strike so far had not affected delivery of external services like foreign exchange, although it disrupted movements and meetings of the top NRB officials. But the strike of NFIEA has threatened to bring the management work to a standstill,” said an NRB official, explaining reasons behind the board´s decision.

Sanjay Mishra, president of NFIEA, said that the management has promised to hold talks with them on Friday. “If it did not fulfill its promise, the strike will continue,” he told Republica.
