TANAHUN, July 19: Even as Suresh Chepang passed the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination his family members do not have high expectations about his career prospects.

“My son passed SLC, but I don´t think we can support his higher education,” Buddhimaya Chepang, 60, Suresh´s mother said. “We supported his studies till now, but we have no choice other than to ask him to work.” [break]

Suresh is the only student from the Chepang community in the district who passed SLC from Jana Kalyan Higher Secondary School in Chiti, Lamjung. He passed the exam in second division.

A resident of Bhir Kuna, Hiletaxar, Suresh said is not in a position to afford higher education. “I wish to study management if someone supports me,” he said.

“Government should provide free education to students who cannot afford it,” Suresh said.

Since the death of their father Lal Bahadur Chepang by bronchitis three years ago, the family has been facing financial crisis.

“If anyone supported him, my brother could study,” Jun Maya Chepang said. Jun Maya, Suresh´s elder sister is chairman of Lamjung´s Chepang Association.

Jun Maya said eight Chepang households live in Hiletaxar of Lamjung and Chepangtar of Chite Village Development Committee.
