KATHMANDU, Aug 26: The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday said that the court hasn´t issued any ruling making daura-suruwal the national dress as claimed by some political parties.

“We would like to clarify that the apex court hasn´t issued any rulings recognizing daura-suruwal as the national dress,” said SC Spokesperson Hemanta Rawal, adding, “A three member bench of the SC, however, had scrapped a writ petition filed against the government decision to recognize daura-suruwal as the national dress last year.”[break]

According to Rawal, then Madhav Kumar Nepal-led government had taken a decision to recognize daura-suruwal as the national dress on August 21, 2010.

A writ petition was filed at the SC seeking nullification of the government decision.

After holding hearings over the petition, the three-member bench comprising justices Prem Sharma, Girish Chandra Lal and Bharat Raj Uprety had scrapped the petition on majority ground. Sharma and Uprety decided to scrap the writ petition while justice Lal decided to issue an order as demanded by the petitioner.

Finally, a decision taken by the other two justices -- Sharma and Uprety -- prevailed.

“It is the duty of government to identify and recognize the national dress and the task of recognizing national dress doesn´t fall under the jurisdiction of the apex court,” Rawal added.

Rawal also added that the full text of the decision is yet to be prepared.
