KATHMANDU, Sept 20: A day after the Judicial Council (JC) endorsed criteria for judges´ appointment, Nepal Bar Association (NBA) has expressed dissatisfaction stating that the criteria set intends to lengthen the appointment process.

At a meeting with JC members on Thursday, NBA representatives stated that JC should have prioritized merit based system. [break]

"As nothing has been done for appointing judges even one and half years after appointment of Chief Justice Khila Raj Regmi, we urge him (chief justice) to make his remaining tenure fruitful," said NBA General Secretary Bijay Prasad Mishra.

They also drew the attention of JC members regarding the problems faced by legal practitioners. According to Mishra, the chief justice stated that the appointment of judges had been delayed due to the political crisis in the country.

NBA Chairman Prem Bahadur Khadka, Vice-chairman Surendra Mahato, General Secretary Mishra and Treasurer, among others, were present at the meeting.

JC on Wednesday endorsed the new criteria for judges´ appointment. As per the criteria, the candidates for judges´ position will have to undergo test and interview.
