Nepali woman’s faulty Hong Kong dream halts in India

Indian police have arrested a Nepali woman. According to the ‘Times of India’, Maharajganj Police in Lucknow arrested Bhawana Gurung at the Nepal-India border.

KATHMANDU, May 19: Indian police have arrested a Nepali woman. According to the ‘Times of India’, Maharajganj Police in Lucknow arrested Bhawana Gurung at the Nepal-India border.


Authorities found a fake Indian passport and Aadhaar card in Gurung's possession, and later handed her over to the Sonauli police.


Indian immigration officials arrested Gurung during a routine inspection of the Maitri Bus traveling from Kathmandu to Delhi. She showed them an Indian passport and Aadhaar card, both bearing the name Salina Pradhan and listing her address as Alipurduar, West Bengal.

However, the officials grew suspicious of her documents, accent, and attire, and questioned her further. During the interrogation, they searched her belongings.


They found a Nepali passport and citizenship certificate, which identified her as Bhawana Gurung from Butwal.


According to Indian media, she admitted during questioning that she was a Nepali citizen. The investigation also revealed that she had been working as a domestic worker in Hong Kong.


She told Indian police that she created fake Indian documents with the help of several individuals. In her statement, she explained that she took this step because traveling to Hong Kong from Nepal was difficult.


Ajit Pratap Singh, Station House Officer of Sonauli, said immigration officials filed a case against Gurung. He confirmed that she used forged Indian documents for international travel.
