Nepal records highest single-day COVID-19 case spike of 5,763

KATHMANDU, May 1:Officials confirmed a total of 5,763 new coronavirus cases on Saturday. Of the cases confirmed, 5,706 were detected through 12,403 RT-PCR tests while 57 others through 566 antigen tests.

This is the highest single-day jump in COVID-19 cases in the country since it reported the first case in January last year. Earlier, the health ministry reported 5,743 cases on October 21 last year.

As of Saturday, the country’s COVID-19 case-count stands at 328,893.

A total of 1,287 people gained recovery from the disease in the past 24 hours, according to the health ministry. Nepal’s COVID-19 recovery rate stands at 85.9 percent as of Saturday.

Similarly, Nepal’s COVID-19 death tally has jumped to 3,298 including 19 fatalities reported in the past one day.

Meanwhile, the Kathmandu Valley added 2,486 new cases on Saturday alone. Of the three districts in the Valley, Kathmandu alone saw 1,932 cases while 208 people were diagnosed in Bhaktapur and 355 others in Lalitpur districts.

Banke district reported a scary number of 551 cases on Saturday followed by 422 in Rupandehi.
