KATHMANDU, Jan 25: Nepal imported 1,103 units of electric vehicles (EVs) in the first half of the current fiscal year. The number is almost five-fold of the number of EVs imported during the entire period of the last fiscal year.
After the government through the budget for this fiscal year removed the excise duty on the EVs, there has been a notable rise in the import of EVs. According to the Department of Customs, the import of EVs in 2020/21 was a mere 249 units.
Embracing EVs for Sustainable Future
After the then Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada raised the duty on EVs last year, there had been a massive fall in the import of green energy vehicles. Khatiwada faced huge criticism from various fronts after he raised the duty by up to 80 percent.
