KATHMAHNDU, May 10: A central committee meeting of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) on Saturday decided to form a national consensus government under its leadership. [break]

The third largest party in the Constituent Assembly (CA) urged major parties in the CA to support the party and join the national consensus government under its leadership. UML has requested Unified CPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress, Madhesi People´s Rights Forum and Tarai Madhes Democratic Party and others to support and join a UML-led coalition.

The party formed a 10-member panel led by party chairman Jhala Nath Khanal to hold talks with other parties and prepare government´s common minimum programs, plans and code of conduct of the new coalition government.

Senior leaders Madhav Nepal, Ashok Rai, Bidya Bhandari, Ishwar Pokharel, Shankar Pokharel, Bharat Mohan Adhikari, KP Oli and Surendra Pandey are members in the panel.

“The committee will talk to other parties and decide what to agree and disagree with them,” said CPN-UML secretary Shankar Pokharel.

During the meeting that kicked off on Friday, the party leaders also discussed on potential prime ministerial candidate.

“Most of the central members -- except some close to chairman Khanal -- are for proposing Nepal as the prime ministerial candidate,” said a senior party leader, adding, “There is hardly any dispute within the party on his candidacy.”

But, several leaders suggested the party not to publicize the candidate´s name before ascertaining that the party will get chance to lead the government.

“His name is almost final. But, in view of several past instances of other parties betraying the party, many comrades suggested not to publicize the name immediately,” said the leader.
