The event is being held with a view to selecting boxers for the international tournament to be held in near future and to rank the boxers. [break]
NBA President Rajiv Shrestha and Dolphin Education Consultancy Managing Director Prem Pandey signed the sponsorship agreement on behalf of their respective institutions. Dolphin will provide Rs 100,000 to conduct the tournament whcih expected to cost a total of Rs 600,000.
The tournament will feature contest in both men´s and women´s section, informed Deepak Gurung, general secretary of NBA during the function. Altogether five weight categories -- 48 kg, 52 kg, 56 kg, 60 kg, and 64 kg -- are included in women´s section. Similarly, men pugilists will vie in 10 weight categories including 48 kg, 52 kg, 56 kg, 60 kg, 64 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg, 81 kg, 91 kg and above 91 kg.
The participants of the event should not be less than 18 years and must have competed in at least one boxing tournament either organized or recognized by NBA.
The gold medalists in each category of the tournament will be given A ranking, while silver and bronze medalists will be given B and C ranking. A ranking holder will be given Rs 150 per day as diet allowance until the next ranking under Mission SAG.
The organizers have expected participation of 150 pugilists from across the country and three departmental teams. Only two players can compete from a team in one weight category.
"We are organizing this tournament as per our annual schedule to organize at least half a dozen tournaments," said Gurung adding, "We hope the tournament will prove to be a platform for exploring talents."
According to Sitaram Maskey, the chief coach of NBA, "The ranking system will encourage boxers to play well."
Prem Pandey of Dolphin said they have signed the sponsorship deal with have NBA as part of their corporate social responsibility. "I hope the sponsorship shall also motivate other institution to support sports sector."
Meanwhile, NBA President Rajiv Shrestha thanked Dolphin for supporting them. "Such tournament will help encourage competition between boxers and improve their performance at the international level," Shrestha shared.
