KATHMANDU, Feb 1: Nepal Bar Association (NBA), the umbrella organization of lawyers across the country, on Friday condemned what it called the government's violation of Supreme Court order issued in relation to the release of a detainee.
Issuing a press statement, the NBA objected to the government's move of violating the apex court's order directing government authorities - the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Police Headquarters - to release an "illegal" detainee, Tirtha Bahadur Rai, who hails from Sadhananda Rural Municipality in Bhojpur district, without further delay.
NBA to stage protest at Judicial Council today
Stating that the police arrested Rai from the apex court premises, disobeying its order repeatedly, NBA General Secretary Lilamani Poudel criticized what he called the government's negative attitude of violating the apex court order.
A press statement issued by the NBA reads: "This is a seriously objectionable act on the part of the government to disobey the Supreme Court order. Arresting the same individual on the charge of the same offense is a serious disrespect to the Supreme Court order which also poses threat to the rule of law in the country."
The umbrella organization of lawyers also called upon the government to restore the rule of law, human rights and ensure the rights of every citizen including Rai to live without fear.
