National literacy campaign begins

BHAKTAPUR, Oct 19: The Informal Education Centre Sanothimi has started the national literacy campaign in all the 75 districts of the country from Tuesday.



The first phase campaign was started to make illiterate citizens of the 15-60 age group literate, said Under Secretary of the Centre, Madhav Prasad Dahal. [break]



The first phase will be from October –January, the second from January to April and third April -July.



Some 350,000 citizens will be made literate in the first phase out of the 1.035 million in the year, said Dahal.



The campaign has been launched in districts with much illiteracy rate with priority. This year, nine districts with less than 15,000 illiterate will have the priority in the campaign in order to eliminate total illiteracy namely, Manang, Mustang, Solukhumbu, Rasuwa, Mugu, Humla, Dolpa, Kanchanpur and Terathum.



The centre will use Newari, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Limbu, Doteli, Tharu, Magar, Gurung, and Bantawa besides the Nepali to make the campaign successful.



Though no actual data available, the country is estimated to have some 5.2 million people as illiterate.
