KATHMANDU, Jan 6: The government has announced Rs 1 million in compensation to the family of Jaishankar Sah, who was killed in police firing in the Sarlahi incident on Friday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), issuing a press release on Saturday, announced to provide the amount to Sah’s family. The MoHA has also formed a task force led by the ministry’s joint-secretary Thaneshwor Gautam to investigate the incident. The taskforce has been asked to submit a report within a week. The committee includes DIG of Nepal Police Surendra Mainali and Director of the National Investigation Department Bhim Bahadur Budhathoki.

Friday’s incident took place during a protest launched by five-party coalition including Nepali Congress, Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, Janamat Party, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Nepal and Bahujan Ekata Party in front of the Barahathwa Municipality office for about two weeks.

Sah, 30, of Barahathwa Municipality-6 died when police fired a shot to control a group of protestors who started vandalizing the house of Kalpana Katuwal, mayor of Barahathwa Municipality, on Friday afternoon. Sah, who is the owner of Sarlahi Hotel in Barahathwa, was reportedly coming from Batalbas Bazar towards Barahathwa Bazar when he was caught in the firing.
