KATHMANDU, March 21: The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) has requested the local levels to determine fees and enforce scholarships in private schools.
On Wednesday, the MoEST published a 10-point request letter for the local levels and requested them to strictly implement existing regulations.
The MoEST has also called for the implementation of free education in public schools. Public schools are prohibited from charging fees for any purpose up to grade 12. However, some schools have been levying fees on students for examinations, annual charges and admissions.

Additionally, the MoEST has emphasized the need for effective implementation of provisions regarding scholarship distribution.
As mentioned in the Compulsory and Free Education Act, 2075 BS, private investment schools and schools run under public educational groups are required to provide scholarships from the early childhood development level to 12th grade.
Accordingly, schools with up to 500 students are expected to offer free education to at least 10 percent of students, those with 500 to 800 students to at least 12 percent, and those with more than 800 students to at least 15 percent.
The MoEST has also requested that schools and local governments publish details of fees and scholarships on their websites or through other accessible means.
