Irate students of the college torched the microbus (Ba 1 Ja 9136) and beat up the driver.
The man was crossing the road at a zebra crossing in front of the college when the micro bus hit him, according to eyewitnesses. According to his family members Sherpa was heading for the Metropolitan Police Commissioner's Office Ranipokhari for a police report for foreign employment.
According to the DSP Ramesh Basnet of Metropolitan Police Circle Office, Durbarmarg, the seriously injured Sherpa was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead soon after reaching the hospital. The microbus was already on fire when the police arrived, according to DSP Basnet.
"The driver is in police custody for investigation," DSP Basnet said. Preliminary investigation by police shows that the incident was a result of reckless driving and overspeeding. The driver, however, has been claiming innocence, according to police.
"It was a case of sheer negligence by the driver," said Bishnu Paudel, chairman of the students union at the college. The traffic lights are not working for months, no traffic police is deployed in the area although it is a busy crossing, he said.
The area remained tense for about an hour after the police intervened and dispersed the crowd.
Kin of Sherpa have demanded financial compensation for Sherpa's family and stringent punishment for the driver.
