Dhulikhel city in Kavrepalanchowk district has become the first 'healthy city' of Nepal. Not only is this city the first in Nepal, but it is also the second healthiest city in Asia. Based on the standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO), this announcement was made a few days ago, for which the city also received an award of $ 5,000. While the federal capital, Kathmandu, is constantly being labeled as a polluted city, it is a matter of pride for Dhulikhel-- barely 30 kilometers away from Kathmandu-- to be recognized as a healthy city. This achievement offers a small but significant message of hope.

There are many polluted cities, but one healthy city can inspire many. Dhulikhel, which is leading the 'Healthy City' campaign, has made policy reforms in the health sector and is also working towards the sustainable development goals in the health sector. Improvements are being made in the management of chronic and communicable diseases, while primary health care is also gradually improving. The municipality has played a role in making health services accessible and free as guaranteed by the constitution. It is on this basis that the city has been declared 'healthy.' It may be noted that the schedule-8 of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015 specifies the powers of the local level. It grants the right to manage city police, cooperatives, FM radio operations, local tax collection and land taxes and fines, among other responsibilities. The constitution also entrusts the local level with the right to basic health and sanitation. Because Dhulikhel has fully implemented this constitutional provision, it can now be considered the best in the country in terms of health.

The message of this achievement is loud and clear: If everyone plays their part in their respective fields, achieving success is not difficult. Dhulikhel has been a leader in hospitals, drinking water, hygiene, and education. The use of coal has been banned in this city, and 15 health centers have been established in 12 wards. Similarly, there is no problem in the distribution of free medicines announced by the government, while programs addressing high blood pressure, diabetes and mental health are also given equal priority. Dhulikhel Hospital, the best community health institution in the country, also plays a significant role, contributing to the growth of health tourism. The achievement of Dhulikhel shows that success is inevitable if you have willpower and work hard. Like Dhulikhel Municipality, many municipalities in the country have also done good work in one way or another, and they also deserve proper recognition and encouragement.
