GANGAPARASPUR, Deukhuri, April 12: A massive inferno that had started on Monday evening and continued till Tuesday morning engulfed two villages -- Banki and Khajrauta -- of Deukhuri Gangaparaspur VDC in Dang district.

No human casualties were reported in the conflagration that wiped out two villages. The fire destroyed over 120 houses and many animal sheds from the two VDCs, according to Area Police Office of Ghadwa.

By Tuesday morning, the fire victims found all their property turned to ashes.

Some of the victims sifted through the remains in an attempt to salvage some food items but in vain.

"All our belongings got burnt down in the fire," Gurucharan Chaudhary, a fire victim, said.

He was working nearby when he saw smoke rising from his settlement on Tuesday at around 5 pm. "I felt helpless and I cried for help. Everything was reduced to ashes right in front of my eyes."

"I had no time to salvage any thing from my house. All that I am left with is the clothes in my body. There was 50,000 rupees in a box, which was also gutted by fire," Gurucharan said.

The fire that had begun from a shed was whipped up by winds, spreading it to engulf the two villages. Both villages comprise mainly of Tharu people.

Locals tried to douse the blaze without success.

Premdas Yadav said that as people from the nearby Khajarauta village rushed to Banki village to help douse the fire, their own homes caught fire.

"By the time we reached the neighboring village, our own homes caught fire. When we returned from Banki village, the fire had engulfed all hour houses," he added.

Nearly 50 houses, including several sheds, were gutted by fire in Khajarauta village alone.

The fire was brought under control with the help of two fire engines, security personnel from Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and the locals.

Locals attributed the fire to short circuit at a shed.
