KATHMANDU, NOV 5: The CPN (Maoist Center) has nominated Dr Shiva Sharan Maharjan for the mayoral position in Kirtipur Municipality. The spokesperson of the Maoist Center, Agni Sapkota, told Republica that Maharjan was nominated unanimously during a meeting of the Kirtipur Municipal Committee of the party on Tuesday. He added that the meeting is underway to make further decisions regarding the candidate's nomination for Kirtipur wards 1 and 4.
Maharjan was also the Maoist Center’s candidate for the previous Mayoral election held in 2022.
UML hits century as Maharjan elected Kirtipur mayor
The mayoral position in Kirtipur Municipality was vacated due to the demise of Mayor Rajkumar Nakarmi, elected from the Nepali Congress (NC), on July 26. The Election Commission has scheduled a by-election for December to fill the position.
Meanwhile, the CPN-UML has nominated Dr Surendra Manandhar, and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party has fielded Dhruva Maharjan for the mayoral race. The NC is yet to finalize its candidate. Names recommended include Krishna Man Dangol, president of Kirtipur Municipality; Badri Lal Maharjan; and Himal Karki.
The Election Commission has scheduled candidate registration for November 17.
