KATHMANDU, July 13: The manpower companies that could not send even 100 workers abroad in the current fiscal year will be renewed keeping in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As manpower companies are struggling to send workers abroad due to the COVID pandemic, most of the companies failed to send 100 workers this year. Taking this factor into consideration, the cabinet meeting held a few days ago decided to allow renewal of those companies until fiscal year 2021/22.
Registration of over 300 manpower companies likely to be scrapp...
Entrepreneurs have been demanding renewal of all manpower companies, stating that foreign employment has come to a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If the decision had been made to dismiss the manpower due to the non-dispatch of 100 workers, most of the manpower would have been dismissed this year.
Three years ago, the government had introduced the provision to revoke the registration of manpower companies that fail to send at least 100 workers for foreign employment every year. At the same time, a legal provision was made to increase the manpower deposit (including cash and bank guarantee) from Rs 3 million to Rs 50 million.
However, after the outbreak of the COVID pandemic, the number of people going for foreign employment has dropped significantly as the destination countries and Nepal itself have been badly affected.
According to the Department of Foreign Employment, the number has dropped dramatically since the pandemic, when about half a million young people (both new and old) went for foreign employment before the pandemic hit the world. In the current fiscal year, about 100,000 people have gone for foreign employment and many staying abroad for employment have returned home.
