PALPA, June 7: In an unconventional case of domestic violence, a person in Palpa district has recently knocked the court"s door seeking justice after he could not tolerate violence meted out to him by his wife.

Shankar Kumar BK, 29 of Pokharathok VDC in the district has lodged a complaint against his wife at Palpa District Court, claiming his wife physically assaulted him and drove him out of the house without giving him his share of the property. [break]

It is the first ever case of violence against men registered in the Palpa District Court.

In his complaint, Shankar has claimed that his wife physically abused him saying the house belongs to her and that she is ready for a divorce. He has said in his complaint that he has become homeless now.

Currently, Shankar and his wife Sita married for eight years now, have a 5-year-old daughter Susti.

A house worth Rs 2 million is registered in the name of Sita at Adarsanagar of Butwal Municipality. Shankar claims that he had bought the house with the money he had earned abroad and registered the house in his wife"s name. “But now, she claims the house was given her by her maternal family,” he claimed, adding, whenever Sita and her maternal family members met they thrashed him.

However, Sita has been continuously opposing the petitioner"s claim by reiterating that the house was given by her maternal family. She has lodged another complaint at the district court demanding a share from her husband"s property in Palpa.

Following the dispute, Sita is living with Susti in Butwal while Shankar lives in his ancestral house in Palpa.

Meanwhile, District Court judge Harish Chandra Dhungana said the court tried to reconcile the couple but without success. “It is the first case of violence against men in my long judicial career,” said he.

If anyone is convicted of domestic violence, he or she may be slapped a jail term of 6 months to or a fine ranging from Rs 3,000 to 25,000 or both.
