Man arrested for "murdering" former landlord

ITAHARI, Feb 15: Police on Friday arrested a man on the charge of murdering an elderly of Ramdhuni in Sunsari district four days ago.

Ramesh Rai, 25, of Makalu-4 in Sankhuwasabha district has been accused of killing Nar Bahadur Chhetri Bhandari, 85, of Ramdhuni-1 of Sunsari on Tuesday. A case of murder has been filed against Rai. Bhandari was found dead at his residence with his head bleeding.According to Police, he was attacked with a shard weapon on his head. An investigation team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gyanendra Phuyal of the District Police Office (DPO), Sunsari, arrested Rai who works at a furniture store in Pakali.

It has been learnt that the arrestee used to live in a rented room in Bhandari's house. He stayed there for around four months. It had been around two months that he started living in Itahari. While moving, Rai had left some of his belongings at Bhandari's home. "He has stated that he visited Bhandari's home to take his belongings and later killed him after finding him alone," said DSP Phuyal, adding, "We found out that they had a dispute as Rai still had some payment left to make."

As per the police investigation, Rai was under the influence of drugs during the incident. Bhandari lived alone in the second floor of his home as the first floor had been rented out. Police have also confiscated a television, two mobile phones, a laptop, a gold ring and other things, from Rai, which he stole from the house of the deceased.

Bhandari's first wife died a few years ago and his second wife is living with her son in Itahari. He has two sons.

As per the record maintained by DPO, 15 people were murdered in Sunsari in the last seven months. Altogether 26 men and two women were arrested for their alleged involvement in these murders.
