Makawanpur, New Horizon win opening matches

KATHMANDU, March 3: Makawanpur Cricket Club of Hetauda and New Horizon Cricket Club of Butwal won their respective opening matches of the Ruslan Cup T20 cricket tournament played on Wednesday at the TU cricket grounds in Kirtipur.

A 41-run knock from Rabin Gurung guided Makawanpur to a narrow two-run victory over Nachhetra Cricket Club of Nuwakot while New Horizon recorded a thumping nine-wicket win over Birat Cricket Society of Biratnagar in just 5.2 overs.


Put to bat first, Makawanpur made 130/7 in the match reduced to 17 overs per side and restricted Nachhetra at 128/8 at the close. Top-order batsmen Mani Raj Paudel and Sahil Kansakar contributed 11 runs and 19 runs respectively.

Number three batsman Rabin quick-fired five fours in his 23-ball knock to notch 41 runs. Rabin was later named player-of-the-match. Suman Sunar (15) and Ramesh Luitel (16) were the other batsmen to contribute for Makawanpur which was prized with 19 extra runs.

Rajesh Rimal, Sharad Khadka and Nabin Thapa shared two wickets each for Nachhetra.

Middle-order batsman Rabin Chand top scored with unbeaten 31 runs in Nachhetra's run chase. Openers Hari Shankar and Sharad Khadka scored 15 and 12 runs respectively. Nabin Thapa and Rajesh Rimal each contributed equal 18 runs while Naresh Rawal was unbeaten on 13 runs. Nachhetra got 14 extra runs.

Bishal Mandal claimed three wickets and Ramesh Naresh Giri pocketed two wickets of Nachhetra.

In another match, electing to bat first after winning the toss Birat was bowled out for 38 runs in 13.1 overs. Tailender Karan KC (15) was the only batsman to reach double digit figure for Birat, which lost five batsmen for duck.

Susan Bhari bagged four wickets in his four-over spell for New Horizon while Dhiraj Shahi and Devendra Somare had their share of three and two wickets respectively.

In the run chase, Sandeep Sunar scored 18 runs off 15 balls for New Horizon before being bowled out by Karan KC. Nurdon Sen (3) and Nirmal Thapa (7) remained not out.
