KATHMANDU, August 23: The major political parties in parliament have agreed to form an inquiry commission to investigate and examine the gold smuggling cases that have occurred thus far.

According to an agreement reached among the seven political parties in the federal parliament, the government will establish a probe commission after the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police concludes its investigation into the smuggling of over 60 kg of gold, which was illicitly transported through brake shoes of motorbikes from Tribhuvan International Airport Customs Office on July 18.

This development follows the main opposition party, CPN-UML, obstructing parliament since July 26, raising questions about the gold smuggling investigation. UML, which initially demanded the resignation of the home and finance ministers, recently made the formation of a probe commission a prerequisite to end the parliamentary obstruction.

The consensus to form the probe commission comes amidst the ongoing investigation by the CIB of Nepal Police into the smuggling of over 60 kg of gold among the parties. The first point of the agreement among the national parties represented in the federal parliament states, "The Central Bureau of Investigation will conduct an unbiased investigation and prosecute those involved in gold smuggling."

The meeting was attended by the chief whips of Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN-UML, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Rastriya Swatantra Party, Janata Samajwadi Party and Janamat Party.
