Madhesi parties' populist education agenda for polls

KATHMANDU, Oct 20: The major Madhesi parties have promised to provide free education to all up to grade 12 in their election manifestos.



While the Rajendra Mahato-led Sadbhavana Party (SP) has already made its election manifesto public, other Madhesi parties are all set to come up with their election manifestos at the earliest. SP has said that the government should provide free education to all till grade 12. “Our party will also take initiatives to establish Rajarshi Janak University in Janakpur and other universities in Birgunj and Nepalgunj,” reads the party´s manifesto. Similarly, Spokesperson for the Upendra Yadav-led Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Nepal Ratneshwar Lal Kayastha said that his party is committed to ensuring the people´s right to education. “We will draft a clear policy to ensure education to all Nepails across the country,” said Kayastha. He also said that his party is in favor of education that would guarantee job prospects. He also said that theoretical education only produces unemployed youth. “We will make sure that the government takes initiatives to establish universities in all the would-be provinces,” said Kayastha.



Vice-Chairman of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party Brikhesh Chandra Lal said that his party has proposed free education to Dailts, Muslims, women and people from other marginalized communities till the bachelors´ level. “We strongly believe that the government should focus more on providing technical education to the people,” said Lal, adding, “We will also take initiatives to establish teaching hospitals in the eastern as well as the western party of the country.”



Likewise, Secretary of the Madhesi People´s Rights Forum- Democratic (MPRF-D) Ravindra Thakur said that the party is in favor of imparting education in mother tongue. “The language spoken in a particular province should be made the language of instruction in schools and universities in that province," added Thakur.
