KATHMANDU, Oct 19: The Madhesi Commission has recommended to President Bidya Devi Bhandari to define 149 castes including Muslims and Tharus as Madhesi by presenting its annual report.


According to a press release issued by the Madhesi Commission, the fourth annual report of the Commission submitted to the President's Office has recommended defining 149 castes and more than 2200 surnames as Madhesi. Through its report, the commission made recommendations such as protecting the water resources by protecting the rivers, using the local language in the local curriculum, stopping the encroachment upon the Hindu culture, which is the center of faith of the Madhesi community, completion of the postal highway, providing relief to farmers in Madhesh Province.

Similarly, the commission has recommended including Janaki temple in Janakpur, Laxmi Narayan temple in Balan-Bihul Rural Municipality of Saptari District in the World Heritage Site List. Moreover, the commission has recommended various important issues including conservation and promotion of Sakhada Bhagwati Temple in Saptari district, immediate resolution of various economic and social problems that have appeared in the Nepal-India border. The commission also proposed internationalization of Mithila painting, marking Triveni Dham in Nawalparasi, Tilaurakot in Kapilvastu as a tourist destination. Chairman of the commission, Dr Bijay Kumar Datt said that the commission is looking at the nature of the complaints and is looking to resolve them immediately and has also directed the District Administration Offices to follow up on some of the complaints.
