In the last two weeks, three persons were killed in Sarlahi alone: two Indian nationals at Gaurishankar and a local CPN-UML leader at Haripur. Mukesh Kumar and Kapil Kumar Ray Kurmi of Sitamadhi, India were attacked with sharp weapons and shot at in Gauri Shankar on December 12. The district level CPN-UML party leader Ramnaresh Raya Yadav, 60, was hacked to death on December 29.
The killings in Sarlahi, murder attempts in Rautahat, and arrest of some persons in possession of weapons from Mahottari and Dhanusha are the evidence of the rise in crimes in Madhes.
Last month, Surendra Sah, a local of Karkachakarmaiya in Rautahat survived an attempt to murder him while he was asleep. Three persons have been arrested on the charge of attempting to murder Sah, according to District Police Office (DPO), Rautahat.
Two months ago, Bijay Gupta, Ram Anek Jha and Subash Yadav, who were in possession of weapons including automatic pistols, was arrested from Jaleshwar of Mahottari, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Bigan Yadav. Last month, Bijay Yadav was arrested with a handmade pistol from Tarapat of Dhausha district.
The growing incidents of crimes have made locals feel very unsafe. Due to the ongoing protests in Madhes, series of criminal incidents have taken place in the Tarai districts that have been mired in unrest and disorder for the last six months.
Neither there is adequate presence of police in rural areas nor a regular patrolling along Nepal-India border. Criminals have utilized the absence of security personnel as an opportunity to transport weapons to Nepal from India.
