“Until a few years ago, handicrafts products were mostly meant for foreigners. But the demand for handicraft products at local level is increasing lately,” said Jaya Manandhar, owner of BJS Wheat Stalk Handicraft. Manandhar added that he had to cancel orders from foreign parties many times due to rise in demand at the local level.[break]
Handicraft items like cards, frames, visiting card holders, statues among others made from wheat stalk are priced between Rs 50 and Rs 400,000.
The three-day fair had on display unique handicraft products like khukuri knives and bamboo root products from Bhojpur, Dhaka fiber products from Nuwakot, pottery products from Bhaktapur and wheat stalk products from Kavre among others.
“The demand of Dhaka cap has grown tremendously in recent year as the trend of wearing Daura Suruwal during weddings and other social occasions is increasing,” said Arjun Thapa of Nepal Craft Two Nuwakot.
Nepal Craft produces various items like flags, passport bags, mobile bags and wallets made of Dhaka fiber. Dhaka caps produced by Nepal Craft are priced between Rs 120 and Rs 375.
Hira Shrestha, proprietor of Urmila Aaran Udhyog, Bhojpur said the demand for khukuri knives made in Bhojpur was very high in both domestic and international market. “We make different types of khukuri knives, but the ones with carved wooden handle are very much in demand,” said Shrestha.
Price of Bhojpuri khukuri knives ranges from Rs 300 to Rs 8,500, depending on size and designs. Besides khukuri knives, the demand for other metal products like utensils is also growing, according to Shrestha.
Decorative items made from bamboo roots were the show stealers at the tourism fair. Rojan Rai of Itahari, who has been making decorative items out of bamboo roots, said he was getting orders from star hotels and apartments. Price of these products ranges from Rs 500 to 5,000.
