Lawmakers press govt on monsoon disaster preparedness

Speaking on a resolution of urgent public importance in the National Assembly on Wednesday, Panta, the Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader in the upper house, sought clear information on the government's preparedness to minimize the risks and losses caused by monsoon-induced disasters such as floods, landslides, inundation and the growing threat of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

KATHMANDU, Aug 6: National Assembly member Kamala Panta has drawn the government's attention to the need for effective preparedness for monsoon-induced disasters.



Speaking on a resolution of urgent public importance in the National Assembly on Wednesday, Panta, the Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader in the upper house, sought clear information on the government's preparedness to minimize the risks and losses caused by monsoon-induced disasters such as floods, landslides, inundation and the growing threat of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).


She also asked the government to clarify its plans for the rescue, relief and rehabilitation of vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, children, senior citizens, women and communities at risk.

Panta stressed the need for the effective implementation of early warning systems, the relocation of vulnerable settlements, adequate deployment of rescue personnel, and the stockpiling of essential equipment, food, medicines and temporary shelters. She also urged the government to brief the House on the implementation status of the Monsoon Preparedness and Response Action Plan, the availability of rescue equipment and relief funds, the effectiveness of early warning systems, and preparations for post-disaster rescue, relief and rehabilitation.


Supporting the resolution, lawmakers Madan Kumari Shah (Garima), Somnath Poudel and Padam Bahadur Pariyar also drew the government's attention to the issue.
