The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) said about 500 locals obstructed the garbage trucks. Everyday 45 trucks of the metropolis go to the land fill site with garbage.
“Why should we smell the garbage of people of Newa state? they should dispose their garbage in their own state if they want caste based state,” Santaram Pokhrel, Chief of Environment Department of KMC, quoting a driver of the truck.
“Due to the strict banda, we were unable to go there to negotiate with locals. So I informed officials at ministry,” he added. Trucks had stayed there till 10 in the morning after which the KMC recalled them.
Later, an official of Ministry for Local Development informed Balaju police about the obstruction. A team of police from Balaju post tired negotiating with the locals. “We requested the local not to obstruct the KMC trucks from going to the dumping site," said Krishna Bahadur Palli Magar, Chief of Balaju Police. “They told us their protest was symbolic.”
