KOICA commits $9 million to establish Gandaki Institute of Technology

The RoD was signed by Rajendra Dev Pandey, Secretary of MoSDYS, and Mooheon Kong, Country Director of KOICA Nepal, in the presence of Chief Minister of Gandaki Province, Surendra Raj Pandey. Through KOICA, the Korean government will provide US $ 9 million (Rs 1.23 billion) for this project, which is set to begin in 2025 and run for five years. The initiative will be jointly implemented by KOICA and GTEVTA.

KATHMANDU, Jan 3: The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Ministry of Social Development, Youth and Sports (MoSDYS) of Gandaki Province have signed a Record of Discussion (RoD) for the project titled "Infrastructure Development of Gandaki Institute of Technology under the Gandaki Technical Education and Vocational Academy (GTEVTA) in Gandaki Province, Nepal.” 


The RoD was signed by Rajendra Dev Pandey, Secretary of MoSDYS, and Mooheon Kong, Country Director of KOICA Nepal, in the presence of Chief Minister of Gandaki Province, Surendra Raj Pandey. Through KOICA, the Korean government will provide US $ 9 million (Rs 1.23 billion) for this project, which is set to begin in 2025 and run for five years. The initiative will be jointly implemented by KOICA and GTEVTA. 


In conjunction with the signing, Chief Minister Pandey officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the GTEVTA building at Fedikhola. The event was attended by Minister for Social Development, Youth and Sports of Gandaki Province Bindu Kumar Thapa, KOICA Country Director Mooheon Kong and Chairperson of Fedikhola Rural Municipality Ghanshyam Subedi. 


The project aims to produce a skilled workforce capable of meeting domestic and global demands in the 21st century by aligning with Nepal’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) policy and the 15th National Plan. It is expected to contribute to Nepal's economic growth by addressing the skilled labor requirements of the construction industry and enhancing employability.

KOICA will oversee the construction of the technical institute spread over a 4,630 square meters of area that will include lecture halls, workshops, and a dormitory for female students. The institute will be equipped with modern facilities, furniture, and necessary learning tools. Additionally, KOICA will provide technical guidance in developing a master plan for the institute, designing short-term training programs based on local needs, creating an operational framework, offering career services, and fostering partnerships with industries. 


Speaking at the signing ceremony, Chief Minister Pandey highlighted the importance of bilateral collaboration between Nepal and South Korea. He emphasized that the project will play a significant role in creating a skilled workforce essential for Nepal's economic prosperity. He also pledged his full support for the success of the initiative. 


KOICA Country Director Mooheon Kong underscored the project’s potential to create opportunities for youth, women and disadvantaged groups by providing access to quality technical education. He reiterated KOICA's commitment to prioritizing technical and vocational education in Nepal. 


Minister Thapa expressed gratitude to KOICA for its continued support. He noted that the project would help generate a skilled and competent workforce within Nepal, thereby contributing to the country’s economic development. 


The Government of the Republic of Korea, through KOICA, has been supporting Nepal in sectors such as health, education, IT, agriculture and rural development since 1991.
