This declaration was made at a Resolution Assembly organized by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment here today. On the occasion, the government representatives and the stakeholders expressed commitment not to use polythene bags from now on as using the polythene bags was harmful to human health as well as a major pollutant.
Addressing the program, Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh said that the government has banned the production and use of polythene bags in the Kathmandu Valley for the time being and would follow suit in places outside the Valley after some time, emphasizing that it was the right of all citizens to live in clean and healthy environment.
CPN-UML Deputy General-Secretary Bishnu Poudel, President of the Development Committee under the Legislature-Parliament, Rabindra Adhikari, President of the Agriculture Committee Gagan Thapa, President of the Environment Committee Janak Raj Chaudhary, National Planning Commission Vice-chairman Dr Govinda Raj Pokhrel, among other officials, stressed the need of effective implementation of the government's decision to make the Kathmandu Valley clean, green and pollution-free.
Secretary at the Ministry of Environment, Dr Krishna Chandra Poudel and Chief of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Purna Bhakta Tandukar, expressed the commitment to execute this decision of the government and urged all the Kathmandu denizens to seek an environmentally compatible alternative to polythene bags.
Before this, an awareness rally was organized from local Bhrikuti Mandap in the morning today, which spread the message of the harmful effects of using polythene bags and goods in different parts of the city. RSS
