Karki, Sherpa qualify for Faldo Series Asia Final

KATHMANDU, Oct 23: Tanka Bahadur Karki and Pratima Sherpa of Nepal have qualified for the Faldo Series Asia Final to be held at the Mission Hills in China next year.



Karki booked his ticket to China as the winner of the boys´ U-21 category and overall champion of the second Faldo Series Nepal Championship that concluded at the Gokarna Golf Club on Wednesday. Sherpa finished on top in the girls´ category to secure berth in the China event.[break]



Similarly, Afnam Mahmud of Bangladesh sealed qualification winning gold in the boys´ U-16 category.



Karki carded one-over 73 on the second day to finish first in the boys´ U-21 category with a total of four-over 148. Karki took the turn at one-under 35 and shot two-over 38 on the back nine. Shiva Raj Majhi finished second at 156 after he played a round of 76, while Ashok Lama took third position at 162.



"I´m happy that I got the opportunity to represent the country. However, I know I have to improve a lot," Karki said after winning the championship. "I improved my game today [Wednesday]. However, putting was a problem even today. I should focus on this area to do better in China," he added.



In the girls´ section, Sherpa won gold with a total score of 181. She played a round of 16-over 88 on Wednesday to add to her overnight score of 93. Aditi Ghimire finished second at 187 and Kashmira Shah was third at 214.



"As I put up an improved performance today [Wednesday], I won the championship. I should improve my putting in future. I´ll focus on my putting during the four-day training with Australian coach," said Sherpa.



Likewise, Mahmud of Bangladesh won the boys´ U-16 gold medal with a total score of 153. He played a round of even-par 72 to add to his overnight score of 81. Ajeet BK and Prithvi Malla of Nepal finished second and third at 162 and 166, respectively.



While the winners qualified for the Faldo Series Asia Final, BK and Ghimire -- runners up of the boys´ U-16 and girls´ sections -- got the opportunity to participate in the Malaysia Junior Championship to be held in November.



Also, the top 10 players were selected for a four-day training to be conducted by an Australian PGA coach at the Gokarna Golf Club driving range from Thursday.



Altogether 41 players had taken part in the two-day tournament organized jointly by the Nepal Golf Association and the Gokarna Golf Club.
