KATHMANDU, July 13: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has said that Nepal's current crisis cannot be resolved through populism or momentary emotional reactions. In a social media post, he said ideological clarity, a clear national direction and political integrity are indispensable for transforming the country.

Pokharel said Nepali society made a major mistake by entrusting the responsibility of addressing the country's distortions, anomalies and disorder to leaders who had failed to correct their own weaknesses.

"Nepali society has gradually begun to realize that our greatest mistake was to entrust the responsibility of eliminating the country's distortions, anomalies and disorder to leaders who themselves failed to overcome their own distortions, including serious deviations such as drug addiction, and shortcomings in personal conduct," he wrote.

He also argued that the conduct of those claiming they could transform the country through fiery speeches and populism has proven contradictory. According to him, it has now become evident that such leaders are incapable of bringing about national transformation.

"The working style of those who claimed they could change the country through fiery speeches and populism has turned out to be completely contradictory, making it clear that they cannot transform the country," Pokharel said.

Pokharel further maintained that the narrative suggesting nothing had been achieved in the past is misleading. He said Nepal had made significant progress over the years and that the development process had continued.

He noted that the expansion of infrastructure and information technology had improved people's access to goods and services, resulting in a sharp rise in public expectations and aspirations. However, he said citizens' legitimate income had not increased at the same pace.
