JHAPA, Oct 27: A person was killed while 10 others sustained injuries after police opened fire on the agitators in Birtamod on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Nawaraj Thapa of Arjundhara-11. The police opened fire on the irate demonstrators after they started vandalizing the Area Police Office in Birtamod.

The District Administration Office, Jhapa has imposed a curfew in Birtamod in Jhapa district from 1:30 pm today until the further notice. The curfew was imposed in the wake of a clash ensued between the locals organizing a peaceful rally and the security personnel today itself.

The curfew imposed today is effective for the areas upto the Bus Park in the east of Birtamod to Charpane to the west, Mahananda Chowk to the north and Birtabazar to the South, Superintendent of Police Bishnu KC said.

Since Birtamode remained tense due to the clash between police and the agitators, the local administration clamped the curfew to contain the situation.

The locals had organized the rally demanding action against the murderer of Laxman Shiwakoti. Siwakoti,11, of Arjundhara-11 had gone missing from his home on September 30 and his body was found the following day at Birtamod-1.

Although agitators claimed police to have opened fire in the air, shot over a dozen rounds of teargas shells, and baton charged at a mass rally, KC denied opening fire.

He, however, admitted that the police had to shoot teargas shells to force the agitators to disperse.
