KATHMANDU, Oct 23: The second day of the Jazz festival, The Surya Nepal Jazzmandu 2011, entitled ‘Valley Jams’ set the city abuzz with international performances at three different venues across the capital on Friday.

‘Bconnected,’ a fabulous band from Switzerland performed, at Moksh, Jhamsikel. The band which had also judged ‘Jazz for the Next Generation’ on Thursday shared that it was a pleasure to perform in Nepal. [break]

“The audience is very encouraging and we have enjoyed performing for them,” shared Eugene Montenero, guitarist and co-founder of the band.

For the last 16 years Bconnected has performed at numerous Jazz events worldwide but are performing in Nepal for the very first time.

The second band for the evening ‘Neighbourhood’ from Sweden known for their pulsating grooves with an energetic fusion of jazz, funk and soul swayed audiences at the House of Music in Thamel.

Said to be one of the most promising Jazz bands in Sweden, their music is inspired from the grooves of the 70’s evolving into a very personal contemporary style full of atmosphere and young vibes.

“The music we play is a mix of jazz, soul, funk, afro-beat, pop and our own version thrown in! All of it with a lot of rhythm and energy” explains the trombonist and artistic director, Kristian Persson. With a sax, trombone, trumpet and the flugelhorn, Neighbourhood brings in a bouquet of fresh and unfamiliar brass and horn sounds.

The third venue was Jazz Upstairs in Lazimpat which received the Afro-Latin flavor of jazz from ‘the Cuban League.’ The vocalist of the band Xiomara Laugart is widely known as the ‘voice of Cuba.’

The band’s performance is exotic as Laugart performs together with the versatile yet contagious rhythms of reputed bass player, Yunior Terry, and the dynamic piano performances of Axel Tosca Laugart. The Cuban League is known for taking the audience on a unique and rhythm-full journey.

The Surya Nepal Jazzmandu 2011 will continue till October 25 at various locations around the capital.

Afro Latin Jam is scheduled for Sunday at Hotel Shangrila, Lazimpat at 7 pm, The Jazzmandu Master Class will take place on Monday at KJC, Kathmandu Jazz Consevatory, Jhamiskhel at 3 pm alongside Jazz at Patan to be held in Patan Museum at 6 pm.

The finale will be held on Tuesday at Hotel Shangrila from 6 pm onwards.
