According to Dr Chandan Upadhyay of the department, people with such physical deformities can now gain a totally new look through surgery. The process takes about 1-2 years. [break]
Upadhyay added that the cost of surgery depends upon the severity of deformities, but it certainly is far less expensive than in India. “Apart from transportation and other costs, such surgeries cost at least Rs 300,000 in India. Here it is just around Rs 100,000,” he said.
Upadhyay recently conducted a jaw surgery on an 18-year-old Bibek Thapa of Naikap, Kathmandu.
“I could not speak clearly and had problems chewing food,” Thapa said, adding, “Now after surgery I have gained a far better look and I don´t have any complications,” he added.
Currently, six more clients are awaiting jaw surgery at the hospital. “They have already been tested for details. We will soon conduct surgery on them,” Dr Upadhyay said.
Meanwhile, director of the hospital Dr Rajendra Koju said modern technologies and specialists have made the maxillofacial department more sophisticated. “While dental service is very costly worldwide, we are trying to provide the same service at reasonable rates, “he said.
