Earlier on Saturday, Mahato was thrashed by the police with cane as he and his supporters gathered to stage a sit-in at Jogbani border in Biratnagar in Morang district.
A video of the thrashing that circulated online showed Mahato left with a handful of supporters as others who had assembled at the site of the sit-in fleeing the scene as soon as police sprung into action.
Tensions ran high on Monday after the police clashed with UDMF supporters out on the streets to protests Mahato's thrashing by the police. The clashes erupted in Jaleshwar after police tried to clear obstruction posed by UDMF cadres. They had blocked the road to District Administration Office by placing cement pipes on the road.
A 10-year-old, Amit Chaudhary of Jaleshwar municipality-4, who was returning home from school, got injured in the clashes. He was rushed to Jaleshwar Hospital for treatment after he received a cut in his head.
With local protesters picketing the District Administration Office in Mahottari, all official works were halted, leaving service seekers disappointed.
Jaleshwar, which had returned to normalcy after months of violent protests, saw turbulence make a return following the police action over Sadbhawana Party Chairperson Mahato.
Marketplaces in Matihani, Gaushala, Samsi, Ramgopalpur, Pipara, among others, of the district remained closed on Monday.
Meanwhile, the demonstrations in Janakpur turned fierce on Monday following the arrest of eight protesters. Earlier on Sunday, police had arrested eight demonstrators while they were staging protest against the police action on their leader Mahato.
Seventeen local protesters were injured in the clashes between demonstrators and police that continued throughout the day. Over 50 rounds of teargas shells were lobbed and 17 rounds of blank shots were opened to bring the situation under control, according to the police.
The conditions of Ramchandra Mukhiya and Bikash Bhandari of Dhanusha and Sanjay Yadav of Sarlahi are said to be critical, doctors said.
