He is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital. "We cannot say that he is out of danger. But the condition does not look so grave," said Dr Basanta Pant.
He said Jammakattel has received bone and tissue injures. "The left hand is paralyzed because of the injuries. But it could recover," he said.
Jammakattel is a leader of the Dahal faction of the Maoist trade union.
He told Maoist leader Post Bahadur Bogati at Norvic that he was talking on his cell phone while walking on the road opposite from the Rato Bhale restaurant at Babar Mahal when someone attacked him from behind.
"We are not yet sure who is behind the attack," said Bogati.
Immediately after the attack, Jamakattel fell down and cried out for help.
Patiram Chaudhary, a security guard at Nepal Drugs Ltd. and also a Maoist trade unionist, found him lying on the ground.
